This week, I’d like to challenge you to recognise the unique contribution that you have to make to your clients and the world. But first, a question:
Are You Marketing Yourself As Just Another Coffee Pot,
Or A Valuable And Rare Work Of Art?

I’m guessing that you feel like you’re operating in a buyers’ market. Do you ever get the feeling that you’re jostling in an overcrowded market place fighting for your share? Are you fed up with a market where the buyers control pricing and timing? Well the move from the buyers’ market to a sellers’ market starts in your head. Do you really appreciate what a rare and valuable resource you’re selling?

I might be stating the obvious when I point out that you aren’t selling a mass manufactured product, yet it needs to be stated, because many self-employed people market themselves as though they were. Think about it. The techniques you would use to market mass manufactured coffee-pots are very different from the techniques you would use to sell a valuable work of art.

But be honest, are you marketing yourself as though you were just another coffee pot, or are you educating your prospective clients to respect and appreciate just how rare and valuable your skills and experience are?

There is no-one else in the world with your combination of professional expertise and life experience. You are marketing a scarce and unique resource. It’s your time and your expertise. And whilst you can continually build on your expertise, you can’t manufacture any more of time. The number of projects or assignments you can accept this year is FINITE. So one way to remove the pressure from yourself is to remember that you aren’t trying to sell to everyone. You are trying to match up with those businesses and individuals with whom you can have the most profitable (in every sense of the word) partnerships.

Today I urge you to spend some time reflecting upon your unique essence. You have a contribution to make in this world that can only be made by YOU. And as you recognise this, you will free yourself from concerns about standing out from the competition, because you will just have an inner knowing and confidence about your natural monopoly.

When you really do this, you will know, because without you doing or saying a thing, simply recognising on the inside your unique value, you will get some external feedback. You may get an unexpected referral, or a new client ‘out of the blue’. The world will mirror back to you, in exact detail, the value that you place upon you. If you don’t like the reflection, change your perception, then stand back and watch as the world responds to your thoughts.
