It’s hard to admit that you’re wrong. I don’t care who you are or how much self-confidence you have, it’s a bitter pill to swallow.

Being wrong about where you really are in your business can be hard to acknowledge, even to yourself. Especially to yourself.

One of my mentors, David Neagle, talks about the one significant instant when he realized he was wrong – and how that realization changed his entire life.

He was, in his words, “working his tail off” for a network marketing company, attending scores of lectures, listening to the leaders talk about how to get results. He truly believed that he was in the right place, doing all the right things. But he wasn’t gaining much headway and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t working out.

In frustration, he spoke about his situation with a top distributor at a speaking engagement. The guy looked him right in the face and said, “I can tell you why it isn’t working out. You don’t want it bad enough.”

David admits that although he was very angry in that moment, the man was right. He really did not know exactly where he was in his business, which was actually stopping himself from doing the things that would get the results he wanted.

If he wasn’t willing to find out precisely where he was, perhaps he really didn’t want it badly enough. To find out, he had to be willing to admit that he had been wrong about where he was starting from

Once he did that, he was able to gain objective clarity to determine exactly where he was. He saw a change overnight.

If you think you’re doing all the right things, but you’re not realizing the goals and results that you’re after, that’s an indication that you’re wrong about where you’re starting from.

To figure out exactly where you are, you have to first admit that you’re wrong about where you are currently. Be honest with yourself about where you stand with your business, your finances, your resources, your skills.

Once you do that, you have to be willing to accept 100% responsibility for absolutely everything in your life. And that is an even tougher pill for most people to swallow.

Every thought you think, every emotion you feel, every action you take, every result you get, every environment that you’re in – you’ve got to look at yourself and say “I created this.”

When something negative happens to you, don’t blame that thing or that person. This actually gives it, or them, power. By taking the responsibility on yourself, you have the power to change the negative into a positive. You can make someone stop doing something, or make something stop happening.

To get your business to start doing something – or to stop producing a negative result – you must have the strength to admit when and where you are wrong. The only way to do this is to accept 100% responsibility.

Then you can look at the real cause of the problem. Only then will you be empowered enough to change it.

Admitting you are wrong and taking 100% responsibility are the key to your personal success.

One Response to “If You Are Wrong – Admit It!”

  • Taking responsibility for my life was a huge turning point for me too. It’s easy to blame other people, your past, things out of your control. But that just keeps you where you are. Once I realised that I could change anything and achieve anything – life changed. It doesn’t take much, just a slight change in attitude and a willingness to commit to keep doing it.
