Take a minute to really ponder this great inspiration quote by Frederick Buechner. Think about how it applies to your business.
Do you think that you need your clients more than they need you? Do you feel that there aren’t enough clients out there for your business to attract? That there’s more competition for the business that’s out there than there is business out there?
If this is the attitude you have toward the product you’re offering and the uniqueness of what you’re offering, you’re making what I call the “mindset mistake.” And it’s time for an attitude adjustment.
Here a few things for you to keep in mind to help shift your mindset:
1. Realize that clients need you every bit as much as you need them. It’s easy to forget this sometimes when paying clients seem to be in scarce supply, when it feels like the supply and demand is working against you.; when your are having what one of my friends terms, a “lack attack.”
2. You have unique skills and abilities that only you can provide. You have a talent or an experience. You can offer something that can only be done by you.
3. There are people in the world right now who are praying for someone like you. You are the answer to their prayers. You just need to help them find out about you.
4. Don’t get caught up in the scramble of thinking that you have to sell to everybody. You don’t. When you realize that you’re not meant to be serving everybody in the world, you’re meant to be working with the people you’re meant to be working with, you will feel less desperate.
It’s a mindset shift first of all.
And the interesting thing is, the instant you truly make this mindset shift, your energy changes. And people will sense it about you. You know instinctively that this is true.
It’s like the guy in the bar on a Saturday night, desperately trying to meet a woman. So naturally, he’s a woman repellent. Or the ladies who spend years looking for the perfect guy, and as soon as they stop looking, bang, three Mr. Rights come along all at once.
What happens is that when you relax around something, when you’re not so desperate to make it happen, you become more attractive. Energetically, people become more attracted to you. They can sense it. Even if they’re not seeing you in person, they can sense it.
Here’s an example. A client came to a workshop that I ran called “How to Become a Client Magnet.” We focused a lot on the subject of changing our attitudes and changing our mindset.
When she got home that day she had four messages on her answering machine from people that wanted to work with her. She was amazed at the difference that made.
And she said, “What a coincidence!” And I said “It’s not coincidence. You did all these exercises on the day that we were working together and your energy changed and people sensed it about you. And so they were drawn to calling you even without realizing why. They knew that they wanted to call you. But in that instant you became more attractive.”
I’ve seen this happen too often to doubt it. I’ve experienced it myself when working and managing my own energy.
And, I’ve also seen people do all the right things, yet they’re still client repellents. Why? Because they haven’t made this mindset shift.
Shift your mindset first and your reality will change afterwards.
