It seems that people imagine that if only they could come up with the one thought or idea that proves how different they are from the competition, then all their marketing problems would be solved.
But ‘standing out from the crowd’ belongs very much to what I think of the OLD way of doing business. The old way of business is dominated by scarcity thinking, where there’s not enough to go around, so we have to struggle and fight for our share. We have to be faster, better, leaner than the competition, and if we’re not, then God help us, cos it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there!
I’d like to invite you to try a different approach.
* What if there is already a group of people in the world that you are meant to serve?
* What if, instead of competing, you had a ‘natural monopoly’ – an area where you were born to shine?
* What if, there are forces at play which are, even as you are reading this, guiding you towards those people, and them to you?
* What if every experience you have had in your life up until now, even those things that you think of as mistakes or failures, were shaping you so that you could most perfectly serve that group of people?
* What if, every detail had been worked out for you in advance, so that there is enough demand for you to live well, contribute, rest and play?
* What if your role in all of this is not to MAKE it happen, but ALLOW it to happen?
* What if, every day of your life, you are being given clues and nudges towards this easier way?
Now, I appreciate that it may be challenging for you to agree with these ideas, particularly if your current experience is dominated by lack, struggle or both. But the reason I am sharing them with you is because these assumptions have been fundamental in helping me to become a Client Magnet, and I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t share these ideas with you.
I’m inviting you to try on these assumptions for size and notice how they affect your approach to marketing and selling. You see, you may think that you need to ‘prove’ you are different. But you don’t need to prove it to me. I already know that you are totally unique. That there is no one, no one else in the whole world with your combination of skills, talents, experience and gifts.
I believe that everything YOU have done in your life – even the so called mistakes and failures – has equipped you perfectly in the same way. So it’s not about proving you are different. It’s about recognising and celebrating your uniqueness. If you want clients to recognise that you are ‘different’, then shouldn’t that start with you?
You don’t need a unique selling proposition, when you recogise that you ARE your unique selling proposition. Be willing to experience it this week and share it with others. Remind yourself each morning. Remember it as you communicate with prospective clients. You have nothing to prove.
